PCM during crystallization

What are BioPCM® products?

Phase change materials (PCMs) are substances that absorb and release large amounts of thermal energy while melting and freezing. Our BioPCM® products include a patented family of PCMs developed by Phase Change Solutions (PCS).

As BioPCM® absorbs and releases heat, the material can transition phases between solid-to-gel and solid-to-solid, which is a key differentiator from existing PCMs that transition between solid-to-liquid. BioPCM® can be designed to store and release thermal energy at any precise temperature within the range of -75°C to 175°C, enabling maximum energy performance with minimal impact on the environment.

BioPCM® enables our customers to reduce their carbon footprint and reduce the stress on HVAC systems in buildings, data centers, and telecom shelters and enables temperature control of pharmaceuticals and food products during transportation.

ENRG Blanket®

Our ENRG Blanket® product encloses our proprietary BioPCM® family of formulations between two rugged, multi-layer films (polymer and /or aluminum). The resulting “blanket” is tear-resistant, long-lasting, and will maintain its thermal performance for over 100 years. ENRG Blanket® product is easily placed above drop ceilings, in roofs, or stapled to exposed wall studs in retrofit or new construction.

Tuning the phase transition in the BioPCM® enables active heat absorption in the ENRG Blanket® product and delays the need for cooling in summer. Similarly, in winter, the ENRG Blanket® product can be tuned to absorb and release stored heat when room temperature drops below the desired set point.

Over the years, the ENRG Blanket® product has been installed at >1000 commercial buildings and has provided verified savings. For a building of 25,000 square feet, the ENRG Blanket® product can save up to 81,000 kWh of electricity, avoid 57 metric tons of CO2(eq) emissions, and provide over £8,000 per year of energy savings.

ENRG Panel®

A rugged, easy-to-install panel

ENRG Panel® is a 24″x20″ rugged polymeric shell filled with BioPCM® phase change material that uses a lock-in-place track system for installation on walls and ceilings. Once mounted, the panel absorbs and releases thermal energy to reduce the need for HVAC cooling and heating, giving building owners the benefits of ENRG Blanket® but as a more rugged solution.

Performance is determined by two key characteristics: the melt/freeze transition temperature, and the heat absorption capacity. The BioPCM® in ENRG Panel® is engineered to have a melt/freeze transition temperature, referred to as the “Q Value”, that is close to the control temperature of the space where the ENRG Panel® is installed.
