Case Studies

University of Washington

This premiere project was designed to take full advantage of the naturally occurring diurnal temperature swings which are a part of everyday life in the Pacific Northwest. The innovative building design included a phase change component engineered to take advantage of those temperature swings, allowing the material to dissipate the heat collected during the day and eliminate the need for traditional mechanical cooling.

Results
This innovative design concept works exceptionally well. The resulting performance allowed the design firm to build a structure without traditional air conditioning. The occupants of the building are comfortable, even as building occupancy loads have grown beyond the original design expectation. The energy savings are estimated at $70,000 per year providing a fast ROI for the university.

Telecom Tower

The purpose of this project was to reduce energy consumption and the heat build-up from the electronic equipment inside the structure. Reducing heat generated by the processors inside the electronics can improve the reliability and performance of the computer controlled devices that process thousands of calls on a daily basis.

Results
Installation of ENRG Panel™ allowed the customer to keep the space temperature in the targeted temperature range for the electronic equipment while reducing the building’s energy consumption. The customer realized base load energy savings and significant additional savings in the reduction of peak demand charges that were a huge drain on their annual energy budget. The ROI on this ENRG Panel™ project was less than one year.

Medical Office Building

The building owner, a regional health care provider, engaged an independent engineer to provide and execute a pilot study to measure the energy benefits of installing ENRG Blanket as an energy conservation measure. The results would then be used as an energy predictor for their other facilities. This owner is dedicated to reducing energy consumption without impacting on occupant comfort.

Results
The impact on the facility’s HVAC energy consumption was immediate. Post installation analyses indicated a significant decrease in raw HVAC current consumption. After normalizing the post installation energy data to account for annual weather patterns, the project resulted in a 26% reducation in HCAV energy consumption (30,00 kWh/yr).

Certified Passive House

This charming new construction home in Carmel-by-the-Sea represents an exceptional design incorporating environmentally responsible construction. The systems, materials and building techniques improve indoor air quality, sound, comfort and durability in this elegant home.

Results
The energy consumption of this home is well below what is expected for similar homes without phase change material installed. The weather patterns in this region are excellent for charging and discharging the phase change material and saving energy in the process. Carmel Building and Design was proud to have this home named “Best New Home” in Fine Homebuilding magazines 2013 HOUSES Awards issue.
